Xmas Party Outfit Challenge

FashionVouchers.com is running a special ‘Xmas Party Outfit Challenge’ for bloggers at the moment. The challenge is to put together a Christmas party outfit for £100 from any of the shops featured on the Fashion Vouchers website. There are three prizes of £100 of vouchers to win, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed about this entry!

My outfit entry:

Collage of pictures of a Christmas party outfit
I’ve picked items that have a dark, gothic feel, but tried to make it a bit more festive with some sparkle on the dress, the nails and some forest green. The shoes and bag are both sueded for a bit of texture to contrast with the dress’ smooth and sparkly look. The nails are purposefully clashing with the green: I love pink and green together!

Get the look:

All the items are from Missguided.co.uk

Vanella Cross Over Bodycon Dress In Deep Green, £29.99

Sadira Suede Skull Clutch Bag In Black, £16.99

Barry M Nail Glitter in ‘Pink Sapphire’, £2.99

Jenine Suede Studded Platform Shoe Boots, £49.99

Outfit total: £99.96

What do you think of the look I’ve put together? Have you taken part in this blogger challenge, if so, please let me know so I can have a look!

Sugar and Spice Nails

Pink nails with a top coat of multi-coloured glitter
Another late entry for the Girly Girl Nail art challenge! Life has been stopping me from doing anything related to nails for the last week or two, so this is a very rushed creation. The theme of this challenge is ‘Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice’. I thought that pink and glitter are sugary and nice, so went with that! Simple and quick I’m afraid!

Nails painted with American Apparel glittery nail polish

Close up view of nail polish glitter particlesI’ve not seen OPI’s ‘Rainbow connection’ in the flesh, but this American Apparel polish (‘Supernova’) is a pretty good dupe as far as I can tell. It cost £7, so it’s still a bit of a saving off the OPI RRP, though its a much bigger saving when you think how difficult it is to get hold of the OPI one!

Base colour: H&M ‘Pinkastic’
Glitter top coat (x2): American Apparel ‘Supernova’

Bjork Inspired Nails

Nails painted with multicoloured shapes
Day 6 of the Girly Girl nail art challenge: who inspires you? Create a manicure inspired by your favourite female role model. I had trouble choosing who to pick for this challenge, as I had ideas for Kate Bush, Mary Portas and several others, but eventually I settled on the awesome Icelandic eccentric, Bjork.

The world of Bjork

Bjork wearing bright colours
I first fell in love with Bjork’s music when I was studying film, and I saw the music videos she made with Michel Gondry (who is probably best known for ‘The Science of Sleep’ and ‘The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’). The match between the creativity of the videos and the music really inspired me, and I’ve loved her and her music ever since.

Human Behaviour – directed by Michel Gondry:

Bjork wearing a costume that is on fire

She is of course also famous for being quite a character, wearing swan dresses and attacking paparazzi. For me that all adds to her appeal to be honest. She is who she wants to be, unashamedly so. She’s always ready to try new things, and I get the impression she’s just not happy playing it safe, be it with music, clothes, art or even her website. I have a lot of respect for her ability to transcend fashions and genres and do things that are uniquely her.

Nails painted with crazy shapes and bright colours
The nails I painted are nowhere near good enough to encapsulate all that is Bjork! I wanted to do something inspired by some of the bright outfits and costumes she has work, so I collected together some bright polishes and got started painting some false nails with random patterns made up of lines and circles.

I’m posting this challenge entry late due to problems with my SD card, boo 🙁

Chick-Flick Nails: Inspired by ‘Bridesmaids’

Bouquets painted on nails
Yesterday’s Girly-Girl challenge was chick flicks, and I’m posting this late unfortunately. I got the days muddled up and prepared for Thursdays challenge early!

These nails are inspired by the brilliant ‘Bridesmaids’ (2011). This is a brilliant film: laugh-out-loud funny, charming and girly without being sickly or boring (can you tell I’m not a chick-flick sort of girl?!).

Kristen Wiig as Annie in Bridesmaids
Kristen Wiig plays Annie, who’s lifelong best-friend is getting married and she is the maid of honour. Everything is going wrong for Annie, in almost farce-like ways, and she begins to drift from her friend as an imposter muscles in taking her ideas and making her live beyond her means.

Scene from Bridgesmaids where two characters sing during a speech

It’s well worth a watch and it has inspired these nails – bridal bouquets in spring-time colours with bows! I used Barry M Pale Blue as a background, then painted on the flower stems in Barry M Spring Green and Mint Green and added the flowers using Max Factor Disco Pink and an Andrea Fulerton nail art pen in pink. I finally I finished off the bunches with a Pink Tease nail art pen in white to draw white ribbon bows.

Tropical Nails

Nails painted with tropical flowers
These nails are part of the Girly-Girl nail art challenge. Today’s theme is ‘inspired by the runway’, and I’ve chosen to recreate the tropical prints used in lots of collections for this summer.

Nails painted with tropical flowers
Here are the tools I used to create these bad-boys:

Collection of nail polishes and nail gems

I used a fine artist paintbrush to paint on the leaves and flowers, over a pearly-white base. I also used some nail art pens (though in retrospect, these are much harder to control than the brush so I’d use that instead if I do this again). To complete the design I added some little gem stones.

Nail polishes used:

Base colour: W7 ‘Pearly White’ (I do not like this polish – it took FOUR coats to get it even vaguely opaque 🙁 )
Leaves: W7 ‘Spearmint’ and MUA ’13’
Flowers: Pink Tease Red, Yellow and White nail art pens, Andrea Fulerton neon pink nail art pen, Barry M ‘Cyan Blue’, 2True Crystal ‘Shade 1’
Gems: Pink Tease

Delicate & Elegant Nails

Nails painted with pale pink polish
This is a super-quick post for today’s Girly-Girl Nail Art Challenge, for the theme of ‘Delicate & Elegant’.

This is just a simple plain milkshake-pink polish by OPI called ‘Mod about you’. I’ll do better for the next challenge on Thursday!

Think Pink Nails

Pink nails with glittery tips
Close up of glitter on nails
Today’s Girly-Girl nail art challenge theme: Think Pink. For this challenge the idea was to choose your favourite pink nail polish and use that as the inspiration for some nail art. I don’t think this pink is my favourite (Nail’s Inc ‘New York’ takes that position), but this one goes well with this new glitter polish I wanted to try.

The glitter polish is from Claire’s Accessories and has a mix of gold, rose gold and slightly green-gold large hexagons mixed in with teeny-tiny gold glitter dust in clear polish. I painted the nail tips twice with the glitter then sealed it all in with top coat.

Base colour: Rimmel 60 Seconds polish in ‘405 Rose Libertine’
Glitter: Claire’s Accessories ‘Slice of Shine’ glitter
Top coat: Barbara Daly ‘Crystal’

I think Neverland Nail Blog’s ‘Think Pink’ nails are nicer though!

Girly-Girl Nail Art Challenge

List of nail art challenges
I came across this challenge while browsing Bloglovin today and thought, why the hell not?! It’s just an excuse to get the glitter out really! The Girly-Girl nail art challenge has been organised by the talented nail artist Lindsey from Neverland Nail Blog.

Each Tuesday and Thursday for the duration of the challenge has a special theme, today’s is ‘Think Pink’. I only just discovered this in time to take part, so I should go and get the pink nail polishes out and get started…
